The Guna won their homeland with rifles. In February 1925 they rose against the Panamanian police posted on their cays, and within a month they held a signed treaty. That agreement hardened into the Comarca de Guna Yala, the first autonomous Indigenous territory recognised in the Americas. A San Blas island tour from Panama City therefore crosses a quiet border: visitors leave ordinary national jurisdiction and enter a self-governing archipelago of roughly 365 cays, fewer than fifty of them inhabited. The islands rest on a shallow coral shelf off the Caribbean flank of the isthmus, sheltered by a barrier reef and backed by the San Blas range. Until 2019 the only land approach, the Llano-Cartí road, was a rutted track passable in dry weather alone.
